Cryoablation of the Prostate for the Treatment of Primary and Recurrent Localized Prostate Cancer

Please note: All assessments are current as of the review date; however, new evidence that may have been published subsequently is not considered.
Review Date: June 15, 2005
Recommendation: This topic was reviewed by the California Technology Assessment Forum on June 15, 2005. It was recommended that cryoblation for the treatment of primary and recurrent localized prostate cancer does not meet CTAF criteria. However, in light of the available evidence in support of salvage cryoablation for recurrent localized prostate cancer following definitive radiation therapy, and the limited potentially curative treatment options currently available to these patients, salvage cryoablation should be considered for patients with recurrent localized prostate cancer who are not candidates for salvage radical prostatectomy.
